Cement Kiln Co-processing to Achieve India’s “Mission Zero Waste”

In India, the government has launched a mission called “Mission Zero Waste” to reduce the amount of waste generated in the country and promote sustainable waste management practices. One solution to achieve this goal is the co-processing of waste in cement kilns.

Co-processing is the simultaneous production of cement and the treatment of waste materials. In a cement kiln, waste materials can be used as alternative fuels to replace traditional fossil fuels. The high temperatures in the kiln break down the waste into simple compounds, destroying any harmful pollutants and reducing the volume of waste that needs to be disposed of.

This method of waste management not only reduces the amount of waste in the environment but also helps to conserve finite resources, such as fossil fuels. The use of alternative fuels also reduces greenhouse gas emissions, making the cement manufacturing process more sustainable.

In order to implement co-processing, a waste assessment must be conducted to determine the suitability of the waste for use as an alternative fuel. The waste must be free from hazardous substances and must meet the technical requirements of the cement kiln. Additionally, the waste must be processed to meet the required specifications before being fed into the kiln.

The Indian government has taken several steps to promote the use of co-processing in the cement industry. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has issued guidelines for the safe and environmentally sound use of waste materials as alternative fuels in cement kilns. The government has also provided financial incentives for the use of alternative fuels, including tax exemptions and subsidies.

In conclusion, co-processing in cement kilns is a promising solution to achieve India’s “Mission Zero Waste”. By using waste materials as alternative fuels, the cement industry can reduce its reliance on finite resources and make the production process more sustainable. The Indian government’s support and guidelines for co-processing will help to ensure that it is implemented in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.

Coal mined from Thar fields is going to be used by Power Cement Ltd

Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company and Power Cement Ltd have signed an agreement (MoU) to test Thar Coal in their cement production facilities.
The purpose of this agreement is to use coal in industries other than electricity generation and to demonstrate that Thar Coal is essential for Pakistan’s overall development. The memorandum was signed by Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company CEO Amir Iqbal and Power Cement CEO Kashif Habib.
Under the terms of the agreement between the two parties, Power Cement will conduct a trial run of Thar Coal for cement production in their kilns, thereby reducing their demand for imported coal.
Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company CEO Amir Iqbal said Thar Coal can solve Pakistan’s economic problems. Thar Coal’s value as a cement industry raw material has increased due to the international coal price spike and Pakistan’s foreign exchange crisis.
CEO of Power Cement Mr. Kashif Habib said Thar Coal’s continuous availability and affordable price make it a great resource.
Thar Coal is Pakistan’s game-changer.

Steel shortage may impact the cement industry

The Pakistan Ship Breakers Association (PSBA) said on 18 January that the shipbreaking industry is on the verge of closure as local banks are reluctant to open letters of credit to import vessels for breaking up (recycling) and as a result, producing raw material for the steel industry.

This is expected to lead to an acute shortage of construction steel bars in the country. Therefore, there could be a drastic escalation in construction steel prices and it is anticipated that consumption of cement and other building materials will also plummet. Work is expected to stop on low-rise buildings, low-cost housing, flood rehabilitation activities.

The PSBA has requested the government to amend the EPD Circular Letter No 20/2022 and include the “Vessels for Breaking Up – HS Code 8908.0000” to save not only the ship breaking Industry from closure but also save hundreds of re-rolling mills, small steel furnaces and thousands of steel cottage Industries from closure and resultant unemployment of 0.5m people across the country.

DG Khan Cement Company (DGKCC) has the order to export 600,000 tons of low-alkali cement to the United States per year which will fetch approximately $360 million for the country.

“Our second consignment of 37,500 tons loaded on vessel ABU AL ABYAD has left for Houston, Texas, USA this morning,” said Executive Director DGKCC Farid Fazal said on Wednesday.

He added that the first consignment of 50,000 tons was dispatched in June last year making Pakistan one of the 25 countries exporting cement to the US.

“This is for the first time in the history of Pakistan that cement is being exported to the USA market,” said Farid.

He added that the third consignment will leave for the US next month and considering the good quality of Pakistani cement the country can achieve a 10 to 15% share in the US market. Besides, he added, the company is in talks with buyers from UK, France, and Germany and soon the company will be entering the European market after getting CE certification.

“We have lots of surplus cement and as the supply is much greater than the demand, manufacturers are not utilizing their full capacity, hence we need to explore new markets,” said Farid.

He added that the country needs to expand its exports to big markets like the USA as the demand for construction materials in the USA has increased manifold with buyers looking for new sources of supply following President Biden’s $6 trillion infrastructure package.

Under this package, all mega infrastructure projects including freeways, bridges, and roads will be rebuilt or given facelifts as some of these were constructed almost a century ago.

“It took us 12 months to get the technical certifications for the supply of cement to the markets in the USA from TXDOT, NCDOT, SCDOT, and LODOT,” said Farid.

He added that the USA is a huge market and due to strict environmental laws it is very difficult to put up a cement factory their requirements for cement are met by imports from Mexico, Canada, Vietnam, and Turkey.

“After a good response from our cement received in Houston, I was invited to make a presentation at the International Cement Conference INTERCEM’ in Houston which generated a great number of inquiries and prospective customers,” said Farid.

He added that the local cement industry has a capacity of 65 million tons and domestic consumption is just 40 million tons while exports are just 4 to 5 million tons.

Ziauddin, Dy. General Manager, on the occasion, informed the media that DGKCC is the first to use innovative technologies in the cement industry.

“DGKCC’s latest state-of-the-art plant located at Hub is the first of its kind to have the largest production line with six stage preheater, tower, largest vertical grinding mill based on COPE drive system, multiple chamber cement storage silos to store different products at the same time,” said Ziauddin, adding that it is from this plant that they are exporting the second shipload of low alkali cement to the USA.

He added that their focus is on maintaining an eco-friendly environment by making a significant contribution to reducing carbon footprints by using renewable energy, waste heat recovery, and alternate fuels.

It is pertinent to mention here that DGKCC is among the largest manufacturers in Pakistan with a production capacity of 25,000 tons of cement per day (7.500 million tons/annum).

DGKCC has three cement plants located at Dora Ghazi Khan, Kalar Kahar, and Hub. Plants and equipment are supplied by renowned European suppliers and are based on the latest Dry Process.
